As they interview a spate of suspects -- including the girl's white boyfriend and his disapproving parents -- the detectives wade through a stubbornly entrenched sludge of racism and bigotry.

It's always the person whom you most expect.
I know characters in noir films famously employ a matter-of-fact manner of speaking, but when they're British it goes into overdrive. Nobody in this movie wastes a god damn syllable.

A fine slice of British social drama with a mystery center. Some of it hasn’t aged particularly well but there’s an undeniably interesting mystery at its core and its script is still snappy when it wants to be.
