Neither before or during watching this movie did it occur to me that that’s it’s actually really underrated and I was beyond shocked seeing all the negative reviews. To me, the film features an immensely intriguing, but also provocative story. It’s set in a veiled in mystery town which features very well written characters who lead the drama perfectly. Quoyle’s traumatic childhood experience leads him to living with the conviction that he’s no good for anything, which obviously isn’t true, but the overwhelming memory always seems to find a way into his head, so whenever he closes his eyes, he’s always in that water, drowning while hearing his father’s words, engraved in his mind. Maybe that’s why sometimes he’s so childish, not being able to let go, so steadily attached to the first woman to ever look at him, all because he never really got to grow emotionally, he’s always that kid whose not being able to swim, not able to do anything. The beautiful part of the story is that he finally gets beyond the horrible past and gets carried away by life, symbolized by the house getting blown off, all making a perfect ending.
I also need to mention the beguiling, yet momentarily enigmatic music, which adds to the vibe of the film and makes it even more engaging.
