“Bloody, bloody, bloody Paris!”Rohmer really went in on that horrible Violin music in his early career..
The camerawork is really good actually, feels more like your typical Italian movie more than a Rohmer feature.. the camerawork is more fluid than usual, the performances aren’t that bad.. not good, definitely not bad.
Considered one of the first entries from the French New Wave, don’t really feel like one though. It’s about an American, his rich aunt dies he fucks up by borrowing money because he thinks his aunt will leave him a considerable amount, things turn sour for him.. things get sad, but with a certain optimism from the main character that slowly diminishes, enjoyed the duality of those two factors.
It’s good and with a pretty entertaining plot, and it’s focus on luck and destiny is actually really well presented. Calls astrology Science though.. which is.. extremely incorrect.
Worth a watch. Enjoyed it.. could’ve been shorter, definitely overstays it’s welcome… Could’ve cut out like 40-50 minutes of runtime to be honest. Most likely won’t watch it again, in my life.
