I like that they decided to shoot scenes with inadequate lighting using old cameras that yet to handle low light very well. I wonder what their reaction were while editing the scenes in the island set during dawn to night. Also the comically large fishes in that giant aquarium was genius and hilarious (as it was achieved by using a convex glass to create that magnifying effect that enlarges the fishes). All-in-all, an amazing introduction and blueprint to a franchise.
