IN THE SHADOWS is pure craft; a dedication to the crime thriller genre. The film comprises of characters that are a common fixture to the genre— a crooked cop, angry former boss, the trusted fixer, old accomplince gone straight and even a dangerous dame. This German film is minimal, interested in keeping its story direct and employs long gazes remiscent of Akerman— which says alot considering only a 125 minute runtime. Our titural character, Trojan played by Misel Maticevic does live by a coda that is akin to the samurai; a ghost-like mythic in the urban hellscape. The cold ending serves to further this unique ethos. Part of a now planned trilogy, I can’t wait to see how this unfolds.
