yeahhhh, cool animation and all but god was i disappointed by this. i have no idea as to why this framing device was used or as to why this film was so long. it’s overrun and after the first 40, the charm of the animation wears off and you’re just waiting for something to happen with no real action occurring. sure, you get a different set of interviewees but trust me, those “aha” moments don’t really go anywhere. i mean like, just why not do a short?
regardless, the harm inflicted onto countless latin american governments by the US through years of dictatorship to this day, haunts many. though often slow and overly-stagnant at times, Trueba and Mariscal’s film is a reminder of this and though I won’t be praising this film specifically any time soon, at the very least audiences are being exposed to such information. other than that, i’ll be listening to bossa nova all week!
