Animation in this movie is amazing. I love the watercolors. I love how tastefully they do the scenes. Every single frame is literally an art piece, and I love that.
But where it falls flat is the plot. It’s disgusting how there are multiple scenes of rape and all these actions, and how it’s literally glorified. Janine and John’s characters are so flat. There is no character development for anybody. It’s just like, oh, she gets gang raped. Mind you, all the scenes of that are so long, drawn out, and painful. It’s not even like how Funny Games shows tragedies to make you uncomfortable and realize this isn’t something you should feel happy about. For belladonna, uncomfortable scenes of rape i feel like the creator put into romanticize it, There is no message behind it.
Even the ending feels so flat. It doesn’t feel like anything came out of it. The animation, again, is very beautiful. That’s why I’m giving it three stars, but that’s mainly what carries it. The animation and some parts of the stylization are really beautiful.
This movie would've been so much more beautiful if a woman directed/wrote it.
