while this is great film to launch into space so that aliens can quickly understand the early covid vibe in rural america, it is, like most ari aster movies for me, poorly paced and uninteresting in plot
it’s got a few good moments, but most of the movie is just kinda historian-style walking you through the various symbols of the time
like, the “worldbuilding” is neat, sure, but i am very familiar with the may 2020 usa scene, i was there
here is the setting, here is the mask mandate, here are the politicians, here are the cops, here are the fringe online communities, here are the tiktok and facebook and twitter UIs from early 2020, here is the applause in a grocery store after a maskless old white guy gets kicked out
if there’s a covid museum, this should be in it. they portrayed this little fictional town honestly, in a way that captured the larger sentiments of the times
but the characters in this setting are unredeeming and flat out boring to witness. i am uninterested in their plight, and the film makes no greater statement that i can see
