The last movie I saw with Ice Cube in it was 'War of the Worlds', so watching him act was truly bizarre.It's crazy to think that was John Singleton's debut feature, because this feels like a movie an established director would make as their middle entry in their filmography. Singleton managed to grasp the intensity and moral philosophy of these situations. His direction builds incredible tension with its zooms, and the sound design also adds to its intensity. Singleton doesn't just indulge in this, though, as there are many quiet moments between characters that say so much with so little. The performances are great, particularly Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, Cuba Gooding Jr, and Morris Chestnut. These actors have great chemistry, and they deliver Singleton's dialogue with gusto. The ending of this movie was particularly powerful and contributed well to the message that Singleton was getting across. I can see my rating for this getting higher in the future.
