The acting is very good, but the entire vibe is slow, bland, and sad (and I don't just mean the sad parts, the whole movie is unintentionally depressing). I was expecting a screwball comedy, but got a monotone semi-drama that is content to just coast along. It's a hard tone to describe, but even as much as I love a "feel bad" movie, it never felt like that is what this movie was trying to be in the beginning, but from the start, it feels so empty and gloomy, which is often at odds with how some of the actors are overacting. The movie never quite comes together.

I watched the 2017 Going in Style remake about a year ago and finally got around to seeing the original 1979 version. The original feels like a film that should be remembered as a beloved 70s classic, yet it doesn’t seem to get the praise it deserves. The third act drags a little, especially during the casino sequence, but the final stretch more than makes up for it.

Like the remake, it balances humour with genuine emotion, blending lighthearted moments with surprisingly heavy themes. The 2017 version has its own strengths and weaknesses but still carries that same charm. Both films complement each other well and are absolutely worth watching.
