When the movie started I was in the same boat as the limo driver. I had no idea who St Vincent was. I'll be honest I watched this movie for Dakota Johnson. So in my experience with the nowhere inn I found a pretty good artist, a banger soundtrack and a mind bending movie.
As I read some reviews I saw some comparisons with joker and some others. Sure they are there but what came most to my mind was antiporno. The nowhere inn is not a revival of the Japanese pinku genre with twists upon twist. It does However keep some cool visual choices near the end, a simple story that isn't as it seems and the theme of identity.
So I'll start with the story. What I liked about the story is the escalation. It starts simple and intimate as the two friends make a documentary about St Vincent. Then it turns into a mind bending what is real ride. It feels natural, also Annie and Carrie Brownstein who play themselves sell it really well.
The movie has a theme of identity. Specifically the identity of the artist persona and their everyday self. It is explored really interestingly. St Vincent is the highlight as she decends from her everyday self to fully embracing her persona. As she embraces her persona she loses her friendship with Carrie and in the end no one wins at the nowhere inn. As they decend the visual choices show it in a good way too. My favorite one being the blue light with the many televisions.
The cast do a great job. Annie and Carrie are the best part and they carry the movie. Dakota Johnson plays a minor role as the girlfriend but her scenes were very entertaining. From the bedroom scene with St Vincent to the emotional break up. She is as good as ever. A lot of the people play themselves and everyone entertaining.
The music was awesome. I didn't know her music but I really got into it so I'll definitely check it out in the future. My favorite song was nowhere inn at the end. So yeah found a pretty cool new artist to listen to.
The nowhere in is a entertaining and cool mix of the unbearable weight of massive talent and antiporno. It combines the elements of these movies well to make a good movie with its own identity. I quite enjoyed it even if Dakota was only a minor part.
