it’s kind of just an ugly violent movie that proves what everyone already knows

violent unchecked men are amongst the worst thing that we as a society have to offer

luckily, they all die in this movie!! i just wish they had suffered a fate half as bad as what they subjected the woman too

also apparently this is the second film in a trilogy and i didn’t realize that so whoops!!

because i love may, im very intrigued to watch lucky mckee’s and angela bettis’ other work. this is a hard one to review! on one hand, it seems very surface-level, in-your-face misogyny - i saw one review saying this feels almost like a parody and i get that. a man finds a woman who doesn’t fit society’s standards and wants to make her civilised, and becomes abusive to her and his family in the meanwhile. i didn’t really like the ending of socket appearing, their other daughter that they keep locked away. just felt like it wasn’t touched on enough and purely for shock value. i think one thing that would’ve made it better is if his abusive nature had been hinted at from the beginning, because the family obviously are mental considering they have a daughter locked up with the dogs, but it’s made to seem that finding the woman is their turning point.

on the other hand, this was interesting. it had cool gore and a good representation of witnessing violence can influence children. but i don’t have that much too say about it really. it wasn’t a bad film by any means but it wasn’t great.

I don’t care if torture porn has an “amazing message about the patriarchy and feminism” because at the end of the day, I still watched a woman get SA’d and tortured. It’s not scary, it’s not deep, it’s grotesque and vile to an unnecessary level.
