I remembered this movie being more boring than it was. I don’t know why maybe because I think we haven’t reached the peak of Mechagodzilla yet (we won’t until about 2002) so as a child I might have just thought “why would I watch this one when the better one is over here”. I don’t know the point being this movie does indeed keep moving and I can appreciate that. I think I like the idea of Mechagodzilla more in this one than the original. With the original movie he was an alien robot sent here to destroy Godzilla and take over the world, here Mechagodzilla is built by the military using the remains of mechaking-Ghidorah from two movies ago. I do like how these movies do their best to keep a consistent canon throughout. So much of the original Godzilla run was up in the air as to where it fit in the timeline or if it fit at all, all monsters attack could just be outright never watched and you’d miss nothing for example. Here they always seem to reference the other movies constantly and I like seeing this told over a grand scale of 7 movies especially knowing how the 7th and final movie for this era is a definite ending to this Godzilla as a character. This movie does introduce Rodan into this era and I don’t love his design here. He looks more like a pterodactyl but that’s kind of the issue because Rodan while a very basic design in the grand scheme of things was distinct. Now that he just looks like a big ass dinosaur he loses a little bit of his charm. Godzilla’s son is also introduced in this film just given the name Baby. Baby is actually interesting because he’s a vegetarian dinosaur that isn’t quite Godzilla but a member of his same species; a Godzillasaurus… stupid but it makes sense. Godzilla is a mutated version of this species who grew huge and radioactive and angry. Regular Godzillasaurus’ are vegetarian, gentile dinosaurs and because of this when it hatches it bonds itself to one of the women scientists. I do need to give proper attention to how fucking phenomenal the animatronics and articulation on the baby Godzilla are. Everything from individual lip flaps move, eyelids, eye balls, even his tongue are articulated and it’s a level you don’t usually see from these monsters but I suppose since this one is small and would be in naturally lit spaces around people it needed that proper care and attention.
My biggest complaint with the movie is while this Mechagodzilla design is… fine I do think it’s the worst one. The metal doesn’t look metallic-y enough it just looks like plastic… which is what the suit is probably made out of but still, he also has this horrible overbite that just makes mecha look dumb as hell all the time. I like the idea of it combining with a futuristic jet, plane, thing and wearing it like a back pack so it has extra fire power that is cool though feels a little underutilized. The fact that also Rodan seems to have this weird connection with Godzilla in this movie going so far as to sacrifice itself to give Godzilla his energy so he can fight again seems weird. I don’t quite understand what they were going for there but it’s fine since it brings us to a point where to win the fight, Godzilla gets so hot that just being around him causes Mechagodzilla to melt. Overall movie is pretty good, better than I remembered.
