wow. definitely was not expecting to be rocked by this movie. really really hit me, i feel a little called out personally
this is the most contemporary movie ive seen — definitely the best (moreso than everything everywhere all at once!!) at capturing some of the secondary and tertiary effects of living in the information age. in a world where your life has infinite paths that you can genuinely pursue and succeed in, can you ever be satisfied? can you ever look back without regret? can you ever commit to someone without doubt?
questions for the sequel, in another generation’s time, which i personally would very much like to know the answers to: is there a danger to dipping your toes in new ponds, over and over, or do you “naturally” grow out of such desires? did infinite knowledge fuck us all irreparably?
and this movie is fucking REAL there are actual topics examined and not in a throwaway manner — gender in culture, womens health (i really really fuck with the shower scene at the end, literally zero other explanation), generational differences and cancel culture, the purpose of art, sex, careerism and its cultural ubiquity, and there legitimately were more.
but all that said, to me this is mainly a coming of age story in the modern era — the first movie ive seen that actually captures the effect the internet has on our lives (namely our relationships). wow i am super impressed by the takes this movie posits, and i think it ends at a great point — julies about as old as the oldest person who grew up entrenched in the internet would be today. so the movie ends at present day, and its unclear how her — or all of our — storie(s) will end. we’ll have to see
obligatory soundtrack mention — super varied and consistently banger, always set the right vibe for the scene.
oslo sick setting obviously, so many things in this movie subtly flex that theyve got it figured out over there
and of course this could all be a misread, but after all this thinking i dont believe it is — why include the prologue otherwise? the prologue is INCREDIBLY pointed in this direction, and aksels decisiveness in what he wants is constantly juxtaposed with julies
