Director- Kurosawa Kiyoshi. This is the thirteenth film I have seen of his.I am a bit confused whether this is a sequel, a prequel, or both to Serpent's path. People's comparisons to Kitano's Sonatine and Hanabi explain why this doesn't work so well. Kurosawa seems to be impersonating his style even more in this work than in Serpent's Path. This film also has usage of dark comedy that isn't one of Kurosawa's typical weapons. It feels weird to see the atmosphere being so bright while the screen features copious amounts of violence. Which again is a Kitano weapon. This film tries hard to be introspective, but it fails in that regard because it isn't true to his style. Charisma is a much better introspective film by Kurosawa, and it feels true to his usual style of leaving some things to the user's interpretation. The film is also more humorous than Serpent's Path, although it doesn't always try to be. For example, the chase sequence and the protagonist's being slammed on the ground. The ending is quite unfulfilling and doesn't have that oomph factor Serpent Path's ending had. However, it is tough to compete with everything being explained by MATHEMATICS. As a sequel to Serpent Path, it works excellently in portraying its themes. This time too we follow two guys in their pursuit of vengeance. This time though, it shows the other side of the coin with more importance given to what happens after getting vengeance.Overall this is a mediocre work in his filmography filled with gems and isn't an important watch in his filmography if one isn't trying to consume more and more films of his.
