i have such a fierce love and feeling of protectiveness for ohio. much like a sibling, i can absolutely poke fun at its expense but nobody else can. so of course i had to watch this, and of course it had me emotional. sure, much of the state has been in decline but “the most important task is to seek the voices that otherwise will not have a say at the big table.” (hanif abdurraqib)
this tells a real story about folks who are often used for dramatic effect or just overlooked completely. it probably would’ve been rated lower if it weren’t for the use of actual recovering addicts from the program the movie depicts. their inclusion just really showed me that the filmmakers really cared about telling an accurate and humanizing story. it’s slow, but tender, and both devastating and hopeful. oh, and so so green.
