A 1960 western from Maltese Falcon director John Huston, originally written by The Searchers writer Alan Le May and starred by Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn, The Unforgiven, on paper, should not be bad. It may not have been bad, but unfortunately underwhelming.
If you know me, I absolutely adore Audrey Hepburn, but I can’t help but think that she wasn’t the best option to cast for this role. I don’t really buy Hepburn to be of Indian descent, but it doesn’t mean that her performance was bad here. I actually think she was great, except for when you clearly tell they made her overact, especially in those last 30-45 minutes.
It’s an interesting story that I don’t think was executed the best. It’s still an enjoyable film, but it drags and drags and you can’t help but think that some of these scenes are unnecessary and this could’ve ended 20 minutes ago.
Also, how in the world is Johnny Portugal also Nancy’s father in A Nightmare on Elm Street???
