Pretty gruesome and bleak. I think I was especially shocked by the opening crime since I watched this film on YouTube. I understand narratives dedicated to explaining that revenge isn’t worth it in the end, but that feels like an especially odd message in this case considering what horrifically and brutally happened to the mother. An interesting and haunting film otherwise.

I understand narratives dedicated to explaining that revenge isn’t worth it in the end, but that feels like an especially odd message in this case considering what horrifically and brutally happened to the mother. An interesting and haunting film otherwise.

The beginning is brutal and very realistic for the time period and the influence they are under. Women are regarded only as an object of entertainment by the enslavers. The father of Maria and the husband of the inhumanly murdered woman, loses himself seeking for revenge and suffocating his daughter with his obsessive behavior, not allowing her to live her life. When Maria shows interest for something in life, it's taken by the father away, thus showing her great importance to him and that she is all he has now. He is too caught up in his vengeful and violent emotions that he doesn't let her live. Maria finally finds her love that makes her forget all this traumatic events, but is too soon badly burned under the walls of the wooden house. All the characters are not destined to find their happiness and to put aside their accumulated intense feelings. They are already dead even though they are alive.

Describing this in one word: incredible. Haven’t recently seen a movie that could make me as emotional as this one made me. An absolute unique movie- there are almost no dialogues, just captivating visuals and retro cinematography. That’s why you can understand the movie without knowing the language.
And the fact that everything in this film has happened in the past, makes it even sadder.
