past lives is a TIGHT story about moving on, things left unsaid, and — my favorite word i learned in 2025 — limerence
what do we desire? someone homely? someone who stretches us? or something intrinsic, untethered to an other?
can you ever really move on from a previous version of yourself?
have i been all 3 of these people?
we learn just enough about each character to understand their headspace, and we’re left the rest of the gaps to fill in with our own brainflow. we’re guided oh so gently to those initial headspaces by key lines of dialogue and musical cues, and then, in the last third, the music fades away and the silences between lines speak for themselves. i adored the last third of this thing. I’ll never forget that scene at the bar
beautiful depiction of culture and language, too — i dont care if this story is primitive to the immigrant romance genre, because im new to it and it really landed for me
banger/ten
also i’ve been listening to “when you leave something behind, you gain something too” for years, without realizing it came from this!!! i cheesed so hard when it came on
shoutout never let me go by kazuo ishiguro
