This is hard to rate because it’s not an objectively awful movie but I thought it was gonna be a lot better and Jessie might be the most unlikable character in any movie I’ve ever seen and I find it absolutely incredible she’s supposed to be a protagonist as she doesn’t have even a single redeeming quality.
She’s a reckless idiot, she cheats on her husband, she kills a guy for no reason, and then proceeds to lie for the entire rest of the film which only brings her kind, morally upright, and innocent husband (who she cheated on after making the conscious decision to go to an abandoned church in the middle of nowhere alone with the guy who already tried to make a move on her) closer to death and bad situations.
On top of Jessie’s character, this movie paints itself to be a thrilling murder mystery on a Siberian train. In reality the first hour or so is just the two main couples talking and nothing happening. I understand that this is necessary to set up the rest of the movie and pure dialogue can be intriguing, however this dialogue was not, and for what this movie makes itself seem to be, there should not need to be an hour of boring dialogue.
The other half of the film contains 1 death (not a mystery btw you watch her kill him) and is just torture as you watch Jessie make awful, idiotic decisions repeatedly until innocent people start suffering because of her and then eventually at the very end she fesses up only because there is a gun in her face. Had the gun been pointed at her husband I bet she would have let him die because she is a horrible person.
All in all, if this movie tweaked its promotion and made Jessie out to be the villain she really is, I could honestly give this movie 4 stars. However, she is the worst character I have ever seen and incredibly annoying to watch, and the promotion was misleading, so I’m giving it 1.5 stars.
Also the whole plot basically only happens because Jessie is an idiot. If the entire movie hinges on one character being an idiot it’s not a good movie. (See my liked reviews of this movie)
