should be illegal for a prequel to be this much better than a franchise's original films.

watched this instead of the films that i actually have to watch for class this week, but it was such a pleasant surprise i don't even regret it... that much. predictable, melodramatic and yet so much better than the other live action rurouni kenshin films. i started watching thinking that i was gonna give up (bc kyoto inferno was seriously not good) but realized from the first scene that this was worth the watch. 

would be remiss if i didn't mention the masanobu ando (he was there for five minutes but i still love him) and nijiro murakami (please for the love of god give him his hair back) cameos. i also feel like that plotline has to be at least somewhat inspired by tokijiro and also i'm so obsessed with the fight scene choreography in this whole franchise (yeah even the bad ones.)

Director-Otoma Keishi.This is one of my japanuary rewatches.This time, it fell a bit.The action set pieces are superb with them being shot voyeuristically. Each slash invoked a sense of awe in me.The love story angle was not at all up to par though. It could have been resolved quicker and more simpler too rather than make the opponent commit multiple mistakes like letting the girl live and not killing the protagonist quickly. He took his time and paid the price.The set design and clothing was excellent. I hope to rewatch the rest of the parts soon. Though I still have three more series to watch for the first time- the OG Zatoichi series, ghost in the shell series and battle against honor and humanity series.

I absolutely adore this movie. It’s pretty, the characters are all beautiful and it has every element for a perfect story.
