Long Movie Marathon Part VII
finding the full 281 minute version of the film was an absolute fucking journey i will say, but holy was it worth it. i went into this film completely blind, i had no idea what it was about, when it takes place, and why it was so famous…lets just say i soon found out why.
this film was made in the opening years of the “talkies” era which can be a bit rough at times as they really were still working out synchronized sound, often times i prefer a film from this era to just be silent as that genre had already been essentially mastered, but this was actually phenomenal from both a narrative and filmmaking standpoint. honestly i found the framing and perspective of the camera work to be utterly outstanding, and when paired with the charming and overdramatized acting (which i love), it really made for such a enjoyable experience even with the ambitious 4.5+ hour runtime.
i dont know if this was the best idea to have this particular adaptation be my intro to ‘Les Mis’ but holy shit did it set a gold standard. also i was very pleased to find out it was not a musical, i dont like musicals.
