A wildly well crafted historical story with some jaw dropping visual to pair. This movie really surprised me, it’s simply just a little biopic about Da Vinci but turns into so much more than that.
This movie masterfully dives into the philosophy of the soul and discusses it as children and adults alike could understand it, but not dumbing it down either. Easily my favorite scenes are those where Leo is digging into the realm of the human soul and it is super thought provoking and engaging.
Not to mention the plot here holds it’s own very well for a historical movie, while the pacing kinda moves around weird in and out the scenes mesh together well and really never get boring, the journey we take with Leo is very charming and structured very well. And not just Leo but most if the character interaction are built well and contain good realism for this movie.
This is also a very rare case where the addition of musical numbers does benefit the story and characters, as they don’t pile them on and they actually mean something you come to enjoy and pay attention to them which is hard to come by.
Lastly I just wanna discuss this animation, and boy is it beautiful. Stop-motion is already one of my favorite mediums and fusing that with handrawn sketch style in between and in the soul reaching just elevates it to another level. And while the normal stop-motion is a little too smooth for me the backdrops and pencil drawings even out the scale tremendously.
I really don’t have a real critique, I love how they ended it, although I really could’ve done without them explaining hope, which I won’t talk too much on, as well as the musical number, but overall a really solid entry, didn’t blow me away with anything just crafted a great film.
