Amélie is a miracle baby, who can fluently speak and understand at the very young age of 2 years old. Her parents are Belgian, living in post-WWII Japan with their other two children. But Amélie takes a liking to their nanny, Nishio-san, who teaches her about all the beauty and not-so-beautiful things in life.
The animation in this is stunning, and it’s a mature animated film, unlike the other four films in the Best Animated Feature category. I love the way this film tackles the difference in cultures, specifically between European and Asian cultures, with some animosity between them due to the history of conflicts between their countries in their history, specifically in WWII. There’s such an emotional scene where Amélie believes she’s Japanese, because of the way Nishio-san had showed Amélie her culture. And when she finds out she’s genetically not, she feels lost. It made me realize the importance of teaching my future children what I believe in, because without that, that’s a soul that’s drifting aimlessly through life.
