You never really know what you’re going to get when Steve is selling you on seeing a movie and says “I’ll warn you, it’s a little out there”.
He was certainly correct with that statement. I was pretty confused for the entirety of the 113 minute run time. Even so, I did enjoy the movie to some degree. Maybe not during the actual screening, but definitely during our Starbucks debrief. Sometimes having a true film bro explain a movie to you really helps. Otherwise I would not have really understood the simplicity of what the movie was getting at under the layers it was presented in.
At its core, the movie was about changing times and the human desire to progress. This family came over as enslaved people, were freed, and had their roots dug deep to the island where they lived. The elders in the family wanted to stay and not leave behind the land and spirits of their entire family, dead or alive. The younger parts of the family were in search of more, progress, opportunity, freedoms, and hope through religion. There’s definitely a few more layers to touch on than this boiled down version, but that’s just what I picked up on.
Somehow it was easier to understand this after the fact than during the run time. Most of the showing I sat there thinking to myself, damn Steve was right, this really is out there.
