There's so much I could say about this movie, but I'll make this brief.
I can't speak to what Wakamatsu meant when he made this, but I commend this film for making rape feel so unnatural. I've never watched a movie that made me feel like the director truly depised the act of rape, especially in this genre of film. This is sandwiched between death, a natural process, and love, a natural feeling, to create a really compelling sliding scale that the movie loves to play with.
I believe that the characters seek death because the draconian nature of sexual assault makes them yearn for a natural thing, and because they're teenagers, they don't have the support or the maturity to return to love, even if there are glimpses of it.
That being said, this film doesn't look very good, the acting is subpar, and the middle before the second major color scene is not as interesting as the opening or ending.
Still, really solid. Not for everyone though.
