the runback, in imax 70mm, for free — flashing my new a-list qr code left and right to keep the plebs down
what did i clock the second time around? well —
you can REALLY feel the runtime on rewatch (especially at a 1030pm showing), and, as much as i do appreciate this movie, it really is a family comedy more than anything. it’s an excellent kids movie, funnily (which is the book’s fault) featuring a main character with millennial humor
just like the book, every heartfelt moment is jerked away by a one-liner before it gets too serious, and exploration of the main character is pretty shallow. it’s kinda just a buddy cop movie. two dudes becoming bros and realizing that caring about people is cool
okay then, why does the book work so much better as sci-fi?
well, i’m realizing that the book was way more than just buddy cop vibes to me. i liked the science (you can actually see the problem solving in the book, rather than our one whiteboard, one cell popping, and one mini-venus scene we get in the movie), the high stakes (there’s geopolitical conflict on earth as a result of the impending doom), and the mystery (grace doesn’t know who he is or why he’s on the ship for a large chunk of the book, and the necessary puzzle pieces are beautifully rolled out to you, the viewer)
the comedy and bro-smanship was only a small piece of what i liked about PHM (novel), and i was groaningly disappointed by its attempted character arc in grace
so i guess, upon rewatch, i kinda wanted more. obviously they shouldn't have added to this behemoth, and i won't claim to know exactly how they could have improved this, but i left wanting more nonetheless
anyway. i know this is old man yells at cloud. this is still a feels good movie that’ll entertain and deliver laughs to pretty much everyone who sees it
but cmon guys don’t compare this to interstellar. cmon
