another movie my dad forced me through.
Well, I get what this movie is trying to be. It’s basically one big warning about class division, but everything is done in such an over the top way that I just couldn’t take it seriously.
Apparently Sharlto Copley is everyone’s favorite part of this movie, and yeah, he was probably my favorite too, but that really isn’t saying much because almost every character here is painfully bland. It honestly felt like watching Evil McEvil fight Kind Von Kind. Nobody really feels human, so whenever someone dies or a tense moment happens, I just couldn’t bring myself to care.
One thing I will give the movie though, the action is actually really solid. The fight scenes are great, the robots look amazing, and most of the space sequences are done really well too. Kind of sad that some of the best parts of the movie are just the action scenes in a film that otherwise feels this lifeless.
I also personally hate when movies use sound effects in space, so that kept bothering me too.
Back to the themes, they just didn’t work for me at all. The movie feels like a sci-fi version of Robin Hood, but without much depth behind it. Everything is so obvious and surface level that it loses impact pretty quickly.
There are also some really noticeable plot holes. Like Julio suddenly getting to Elysium. How? He apparently failed multiple times before, but now he just makes it because the plot needs him there to help Max. Stuff like that feels incredibly forced.

**I didn’t like this movie very much, but I can still admit some scenes genuinely look great. The visuals and action make the movie feel way more alive than the actual characters do.
None of the characters really worked for me, and the themes felt way too handed to you, but in the end I don’t completely hate it.
