❝These people are the most devoted of God's creatures on Earth. Father Valignano, I confess I began to wonder – God sends us trials to test us and everything he does is good, and I prayed to undergo trials like his son – but why must their trials be so terrible, and why, when I look in my own heart, do the answers I give them seem so weak?❞
❝I pray but I am lost. Am I just praying to silence?❞

Silence took me a while to get used to. I'm not particularly religious, so immersing myself in another period of time, another country, and another religion, feeling the strength of the faith shown by the characters was admittedly a little difficult. But the outstanding performances from Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson and Adam Driver drove me to tears, and I was almost completely engrossed all the way to the end. I'm usually pretty good with violence, but something about the brutality compared to the people's 'crimes', their blood-curdling screams, and the sheer lack of humaneness made me sick. From a purely technical perspective, this film is beautiful, chock-full of stunning compositions and landscapes while still retaining a bleak atmosphere. I'm not sure I can watch Silence again without my stomach turning, but it's definitely up there in Scorsese's works.
