Some of the most hollow surrealism I’ve ever seen.
Enough pretty images for 10 movies, but not enough substance for 1. It’s artsy and poetic dialogue juxtaposed with surreal imagery, and that’s it. I felt 0 attatchment to any characters, events, or themes the film attempted to present. I don’t say this often, but this feels very pretentious. I dislike movies who insist that they’re smarter than they are, and this is one of the worst offenders of that. Everything it tries I’ve seen done better in different films. Surrealism is hard to pull off, and City of Pirates is a perfect example of why.
