“i hand down the verdict in the name of god. thou art not guilty”
my favourite hobby is watching really obscure japanese horror-action films on tubi, because they honestly never fail to entertain me, especially after a long day. this is true cinema to me. some may call it trash, while i partly agree, it’s still insanely fun nonetheless and its super unhinged nature makes everything just work so well. action has always came to my mind with my least favourite genre, because often it’s cliched and usually follows the good vs bad trope, plus the actual action just looking dull. but japanese action for some reason just hits a spot. maybe it’s because they aren’t afraid to go more full out in the gore department, or maybe it’s because they generally look a lot more stylised, or maybe it’s simply because it doesn’t follow the formulaic good vs bad approach, as it seems that every character is usually morally ambiguous, this is a pure example as while the protagonist here has good intentions here, she decapitates lots of heads making her hero status kinda undeserved. here, there’s little to no plot, and it’s clearly focused on really fast paced action sequences, which didn’t bother me but the reason this isn’t any higher, is the last 20 minutes were kinda dragging as the runtime didn’t really work for the type of movie it was trying to be. yuki, the main protagonist, is one of the main highlights. from her really stylised, gorgeous gothic lolita outfit to her parasol used as her weapon - with a multitude of purposes. the villains are also quite memorable, especially that has a weapon of a mobile phone. it’s basically a lower budget version of kill bill vol. 1 or lady snowblood, probably weaker in comparison to the two, but this is a great japanese splatter-horror film that is good enough to be put in the same bracket as legendary gore movies such as the machine girl or the tokyo gore police. the fashions immaculate, it delivers on the gore, and is also just thrilling from start to finish, with some twists here and there.
