A major criticism for me is that the movie sometimes portrays troubled teen camps as if they aren’t incredibly inhumane, degrading, and dangerous. It sometimes acts as though these camps are a good and helpful solution, which it definitely isn’t.
The first half before the camp reminds me of the movie Thirteen, except that the stealing and drug use aren’t hidden and the parents (especially the mother) are aware of it and try to stopp it. I also think the movie is a bit too rushed. The transformation from the sweet girl to the rebellious girl happens far too quickly, with abrupt time skips that lack clear explanation. While the time skips make more sense later on, the beginning feels too rushed. I would have been more interested in seeing the transition developed more naturally.
