Unlike many of my movie enjoyer peers, this was my first Bong Joon-ho movie (I haven’t seen parasite yet, sue me). From the various bits of chatter I’ve heard, ratings I’ve seen, and reviews I have read, it seems like people went into this expecting a specific style and were disappointed that their that expectation was not met.
Since I had no expectation and this was my first movie with the directors style, I was in love because I was fortunate to come with such a fresh perspective and open mind. Mickey 17 felt fresh and creative. It was satirical but not in an overly intentional manner. It employs an incredible cast who get to the opportunity to embellish such outrageous, yet believable characters. The premise is simple and genius, but also so complex and perfectly timely with today’s cultural and political climate. It was a lovely, hilarious, and brilliantly done movie.
Even with how much i genuinely enjoyed this, my thoughts kept going back to trying to understand why others didn’t. Why are my peers comparing this to previous works so heavily and filling their minds with expectations. To be fair, this is normal. When I first saw Jordan Peele’s Nope, I left the theater disappointed. I built the movie up to be this politically charged thriller in my mind before entering the theater. When my expectation wasn’t matched I was left wishing I had been fulfilled. Looking back on it, Nope was a fantastic movie. It wasn’t Peele’s prototypical narrative, but it was brilliant nonetheless. A few years from now, I hope that Mickey 17 is viewed in the same way for those who were let down with their first watch.
A fresh perspective and open mind are a key requirement to any new experience.
