“your vice is a locked room and only I have the key” — okay very thanks to The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh movie for the credit title (yess ikr this is an adaptation from Edgar Allan Poe’s The Black Cat) <3
wowoww what a haunting descent into decadence.
Sergio Martino takes the twisted elegance of
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh and pushes it even further, darker, stranger, and more claustrophobic. it feels like a gothic fairy tale for me
this movie unravels inside a decaying villa, where Irina (played by
Anita Strindberg) lives under the torment of her cruel, alcoholic husband, Oliviero. when his seductive niece, Floriana (played by
Edwige Fenech) arrives, the atmosphere shifts from suffocating to poisonous. like— every look and gesture feels charged with desire, resentment, and betrayal
love how Martino fascinates me with plays with illusion and manipulation. no one’s innocent here, literally everyone hides something behind their eyes. the mix of erotic tension, psychological cruelty, and gothic dread makes this one of the most intoxicating giallo films i’ve ever seen!!
and the ending... oohh still left me stunned after knowing how chaotic Martino’s worlds can be. i really love how this film feels like a mirror... cracked, glittering, and dangerous. it reflects both the horror and allure of human weakness, kinda fever dream of jealousy, madness, and desire and ofc i couldn’t look away 🌚
