my clickbait review for this movie is that it’s one battle after another for ~intellectuals~, a term that, if you check my relative ranking of those two movies, you can see I’m using as somewhat of a slur
the dueling archetypes of this movie, and their actual token invocations in emma stone and jesse plemens, play REALLY well together, and the core theme (themes? no — theme, singular) is, as per usual with yogros lanthimos, a very modern and correct take on a topic that probably has never been explored before by any artistic media
highly political, in the best way
so far, so good, right? very OBAA
but on the lanthimos shelf at the library, this is by far the most AP Lit and least blockbuster of the ones I’ve seen (which, as of now, is just poor things, the favourite, and this)
pacing? takes too long to get started, takes too long to wrap up. classic yorgie
visuals? emma stone’s shaved head covered in goo, not much else. the 4:3 aspect ratio is a science project and I have never authorized its use in the wild
sound? like, straight up dissonant whiny strings. very boring. i hear these audios on tiktok 4 times a day. a better soundtrack (really?? not something electronic???? cmon it would SO work here) would honestly bump this up a significant amount for me
acting? … fair enough. jesse plemens and emma stone are both incredible here. third guy also slaps — aidan delbis — a name I’ll be remembering — and wow, the more I think about him, the more i realize don’s character is instrumental to the plot and conveyal of feeling (
I would also describe this as the first time a genre label has spoiled a movie for me. the fact that this is labeled as “science fiction” absolutely does ruin the surprise — movies featuring conspiracy theories are just dramas, unless the conspiracies are true. therefore, from “sci fi + two guys abduct a ceo and believe she’s an alien”, you can kinda see exactly where it ends before you enter the theater. spoiler? maybe — the ending doesn’t really matter, it’s more about the ride, but boy do I hate when a viewing is tainted by some unnecessary bs
