Who’s cutting them for you?
An odd charm. Schumacher way out of his prime picks up a thriller. It’s perpetually inevitable. It sputters along like the worst manual driver ever, the gears screaming for mercy as the car jerks back and forth forward. It’s literally by definition perpetual. You think one thing will happen and we swoop back to first base. A solution arises, sike we’re back to first base. Ok now they got it, nope, back to first base. It’s hilarious watching it spin round and round in the same location. Usually that would a critique. It’s repetitive, boring going nowhere. But somehow in this, exploring every square inch of the same wall you’ve been looking at for 90 minutes. A good film arises. A man doing it for his family and out of love. We can all cheer that. The weird energy fades away. Nothing about this is proper or formulaic, in fact I’m sure many people that hate it will say what the fuck is going. But somewhere in these medial inches it moves; I found a good time. Nic Cage is Nic fucking cage, playing a down on his luck man with literally nothing to lose at this point. An insane fretless attitude tossing himself at these intruders purely for his family’s safety. He’s gonna do anything to do nothing for these men. It’s oddly ironic and hilarious. Nicole Kidman is Nicole Kidman, mesmerizing as always and finds her right windows to be knockdown with her presence and energy per usual. This is an odd fucking film and an odd fucking time. An odd amount of random eye candy shots, not that it’s hideous between but still, oddly awesome when it goes saucy. But oddly enough, I had a good time.
