There's hope in hopelessness.
This movie has been in my watchlist for months and I'm in awe after watching it. I'm from Philippines and I guess I am not knowledgeable about Filipino cinema but despite my poor knowledge this movie by Lino Brocka is a masterpiece, it spoke directly to my heart, and I felt everything I saw and I hear. You can trample the human soul, heart, and mind, but when it comes to someone they hold dearly, do not expect kindness from them. Julio ignores most of the sufferings and injustice he faces throughout the movie like having his salary cheated, having his diary and money stolen, and even being accused of horrible things, but there's something that will make him break from the shackles of heaven, Ah Tek killed and made Ligaya, Julio's life and dream, suffer, and that's what made Julio ignore his values and compassion, and turned into a revenge seeking killer.
Justice was served, not by the government or police or even the Supreme Court, it was served by an ordinary citizen, that was trampled through and through by all of those above him, though killing someone through vengeance might not be justice and humane, it was a brave and possibly the inherently right thing to do, because those who has destroyed and taken many lives deserves to be killed by those same kind of people they have killed. Currently nothing has changed in Manila, although there's so many skyscrapers, the dream of those from the provinces remains out of reach, because of people who is above ordinary people. "Makibaka" a word always spoken through protests to encourage everyone to step up and make justice equal again. Maynila, the dream that is better in dreams.
