Bond could seduce Cleopatra if he wanted to
Possibly controversial opinion but…this is better than GoldenEye. I know, I know, sounds like I’m disrespecting the Bible but Tomorrow Never Dies is one hell of a blast that’s pretty consistent through its 2+ hour runtime. Bond is classic Bond, shoddy punch SFX, banging every woman he comes across, and saves the day like a total badass at the last second. I believe it’s a total upgrade from GoldenEye, a perfect spy story through and through with a fun focus on corrupt news media which is very prevalent in today’s world.
Without a doubt some sequences in this film inspired Mission Impossible, not the series as a whole, which probably did get some ideas from James Bond, but 100% the underwater boat sequence was matched in Final Reckoning. I think that’s why I enjoy this much more than GoldenEye, it’s more action packed and feels very much like a Mission Impossible film.
My main critique of this film is how little the side characters are utilized, that’s where GoldenEye wins a point. Some of the best side characters from the first film get 5 minutes or less of screen time, and those characters helped contrast the Bond character but also help showcase the inner workings of the government. My other small critique is that the action set pieces feel much smaller compared to GoldenEye, and instead try to mimic certain action scenes on a smaller scale that couldn’t even match what was done in GoldenEye.
Live, laugh, love…Bond’s linguistic diversity. If you wanna bag every woman, you need to know every language.
