Ughhh I wanted to like this so bad. But ultimately it was unsatisfying and shallow. Also kind of bit off of antebellum which came out 2 years earlier and was a way better film with a similar subject

When it takes you more than half the total run time to establish the baseline plot for the movie, you’re doing something wrong. The pacing was an absolute train wreck and the premise was quite something. This felt like a nothing movie with nothing characters in which scenes were just sloppily placed next to each other with a soundtrack and then someone just called it a day. Love Keke Palmer but this movie was not it.

This just felt so odd. I obviously have no right to comment on how a certain group of people tell their people’s stories but it just felt so off. It felt as though it wanted to give a #girlboss moment which is fine but you are dealing with a VERY heavy subject here and yes the story isn’t a biopic but other REAL people experienced this. Like I said it’s fine to have an empowering ending and 2nd half but the writing and overall story just skipped past so much depth that could have been explored. Like are we just gonna move past the fact our character experienced 20+ years of illegal modern slavery AND why did they write it so the man main character never acknowledged it!?!? Like idk if I’m tripping but this senerio is not a common one so why are we just brushing it over, like I generally didn’t know if he actuallly knew what she went through and where she came from cause they never mentioned it. Like we had a whole 20 minuets section of her experiencing modern day things like we’re in a sci-fi and she’s an alien come down to earth but never a conversation about the fact she thought it was still the 1800s?? Like I said its not my situation to chip in on but the fact we never got a deeper conversation about what happened to the character (and also to real victims) is such a shame and it just felt so odd seeing this made into a girlboss thriller with a political and historical story but yet never acknowledge the political and historical aspects.
