Shot in 1971 but banned until 1986, this distinctly Russian war story takes place in 1942 behind enemy lines. A regiment of partisans captures former Red Army lieutenant Lazarev who is dressed in a German uniform. He’s a Nazi defector and collaborator but now desires to switch back and fight with Russian partisans.

A great & stark exploration into the spiritual ennui of WW2 era Soviet Partisans. You can feel the misery and bleakness that seeps into every crevice of every frame, coated in dirt and a deep miserableness. I do think this suffers from being fairly similar to each film about Soviet Partisans during WW2 [Ivan’s Childhood, The Ascent, Come And See] but it still holds up nonetheless. War is senseless.
I must commend it for its willingness to portray the partisans in a relatively unbiased, unheroic light - which is why it was banned for 15 years. Absolutely baffling how sensitive the USSR was.

Fantastically tough film. There are far fewer sins in war than being a traitor, and for that it is near impossible to be forgiven for it, and this movie does a good job of conveying that. The movie is fascinating to watch, the performances are all solid, and it general looks great in black and white. Wish it was longer and expanded on some characters and moments though, i wanted more.
