one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time, easily a contender for favorite thing I watched this year.
the movie is about an objectively goofy concept and is a sequel for crying out loud (and would you have guessed that genre-wise this thing is a rom-com?), but the creators know that the audience knows all of that, and have created a beautifully packaged experience which lures you in with its expectations of what it is -- then defeats some aspects of those expectations masterfully, and leans into others so hard that it's hilarious.
I think it rides the line really well, which is super impressive for a director that's been handed the reigns to a goofy ass sequel to a 30 year old movie
to name specific wins other than the expectation-play here -- the characters are fantastic and the rural oklahoma vibes are off the fuckin charts
the country music BANGS, the visuals are really good -- the vfx were shockingly high quality, the shots of rural oklahoma were gorgeous -- it's laugh-out-loud funny, so far as I'm concerned this is the first good implementation of the "youtuber" character in a movie... and on that note there's some really good commentary in this movie! on youtubing (duh) and virality on the internet, on climate change and corporate greed, and dear lord on how to rizz up a girl 101
and holy fuck that opener is INCREDIBLE my jaw was on the fucking floor, the action is somehow good in this movie
only bad thing I have to say about it is that the music during one of the car chase-y scenes was so bad it took me out of it
