Only 8K views?!? Come on. Filmmakers go into the Criterion Closet and pick the same five movies over and over yet movies like this get completely shut out. That’s why barely anyone’s watching them, which is such a shame. But, by that token, if everyone were watching them, then they wouldn’t be considered hidden gems. This is one of those that should absolutely be seen. Incredible lighting here. Thrilling story. Terrific stuff.

Boat people is the next step in my way into Ann Hui filmography. It is a very good movie. It’s tells a interesting and very intriguing story and it tells it in a good way, that worked for me really well. The film is very good filmed and here and there is an absolute stunning shot. 

This film also didn’t scare away from being brutal and shocking, wich fits the movie well. There is one scene that made my mouth stay open for a few minutes.

Also I am not shure about how much of the portaging of post-war Vietnam is realistic. I am also not sure if this just wants to be anti-communism propaganda or if it wants to criticize the aftermath of a colonial war but not through explizit telling. I kinda torn on that.

One of the most beautifully shot and dressed films I’ve seen.. incomprehensible that things like this happened and continue to happen because of the imperialist machine and corrupted powers. this film physically made my chest hurt and yet had such touching moments of humanity. i appreciate this review
