We watched this in my screenwriting class. I'll be the first to say that Republicans suck, but for democrats to think they are so morally superior, making something like this when they are barely any better is ridiculous. I know this came out 3 or 4 years ago, but it’s already aged horribly as the Democratic Party has gotten even worse, funding a literal genocide in Palestine. I know that has nothing to do with this, but I’m so fucking tired of this whole “go vote” “anything is better than Trump” bullshit. I apologize for the political rant, but even looking past that this film is so tone deaf and boring.
It came out at a time when covid was still the biggest threat to the world, but even though this takes places during covid it only focuses on the political landscape at the time. Most of the characters are rich people with rich people problems and I can’t be asked to care. The five segments are all disconnected from each other and vary in quality. Midler’s segment was unbearable, Levy and Rae’s were fine, and Paulson’s was a little better. The acting is pretty solid across the board, I think it’s mostly the writing that brings it down and the format that makes it so boring. The only reason I’m not rating it lower is because Kaitlyn Dever’s portion is actually really good. She’s playing a nurse during the height of covid, telling a very emotional story, and even though the end of it is a little cheesy, it was a character you could actually sympathize with. I would not recommend watching this.
