somehow this has the look and simplicity of an animated movie that doesnt always feel made for usual adults, but then it pulls out one of the best plot twists i’ve seen. the reveal was actually amazing. it does point you in that direction a little bit, but there are still so many ways it couldve gone that it lands as shocking anyway. i’ve seen this before and still kind of forgot who holiday was, which says a lot about how clever the misdirection is. the movie never gives you that one obvious reminder where you go “oh yeah, now i remember.” it keeps it slippery.
this one definitely feels less focused on visuals than part one. the acting and dialogue are more dominant, and the story feels clearer. batman is also shown with a bit more experience now, which i liked, but i really didn’t care for the poison ivy section. the scarecrow interaction worked much better for me, especially because crane is such an important character to batman psychologically. using that to pull us back into bruce’s parents’ murder was really well placed.
i also really liked this version of harvey. him becoming two-face and then surrendering himself was such an interesting choice. we obviously know what that turns into later, but within this story it worked really well. part one felt more like a mystery, crime drama thriller, while this one leaned more into horror thriller, with the slight gothic side too. not as visually gorgeous as the first, but the reveal, the darker tone, and the harvey stuff made it really fun.
