All you really need to know is that John Hawkes is in it.
That being said, it starts out a little odd, with some iffy acting (and some in later scenes), but it soon becomes so much more.
Each segment is presented out of chronological order and is technically remarkable as they are each, one long take. These are not given a time stamp, instead, letting the viewer work out where in the timeline we are watching.
The pay-off is superb, if a little predictable. It is the type of pay-off that would easily warrant a second viewing (especially for the song that Samson sings for Dorothy).
The dialogue is superb and there are some interesting characters, that play well along with Hawkes’ PI Samson. It could be considered an homage to the old crime noir film genre. In fact, if it were to be filmed in monochrome, it world give the film a remarkable quality (I may even adjust my televisions colour on that second viewing).
It has a fair runtime of 107mins but I feel this could be slightly trimmed down with a few dialogue scene, that seemed irrelevant.
I’m a big fan of Hawkes, as you can tell, and this is just another film he has been in that proves his star quality.
