This film is deeply painful, incredibly bleak. “I loved Mankind, and I love it more now that it’s gone.” And maybe that’s the point as long as we’re still searching, still moving, hope isn’t truly dead.

I’ve already written a bit about this here. But this is the kind of film I could muse on every time I watch it.

The starting point is the end: the death drive. It can’t be stated more clearly than an obsidian locomotive headed right toward you simultaneously being driven by you. From here we must extrapolate the existential contradiction of the human condition. We are left with contradiction and conflict, within and as a part of existence. The film’s ozone layer is of a pessimistic spirituality. Characters muse about the relationship between god, his will, and the atrocities of our species.

This film is so deeply felt. It is operating at a spiritual level that resides in a place not often thought of. The default for post-apocalyptic stories is the substance or logistics of survival. Even the psychological is but reactionary to environmental changes. But here, the reaction is not in response to environmental changes, but to existential evidential changes. In a question, "How could god let this happen?" This film’s language sees corporeal survival as but a contingency of a greater ecosystem. The question of man, its future after its end, is directly confrontational to what it means to live.

Lopushansky’s cinematographer, Nikolai Pokoptsev, sure seems indebted to Tarkovsky. But narratively and spiritually, its pessimism recalls Dostoevsky. The father who monologues about love while his son listens, knowing what’s to come, feels right out of one of his books. To the film’s credit, its concluding optimism is endearing. The humanistic blanket wrapped around the final moments warms the heart. It’s as if Lopushansky saw how extinguished the proverbial flame was looking and so reignited it for us. But like the good pessimist I am, I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind that the candle will expire at some point, it’s just the violence of its extinguishment that seems to be the question.

A must watch
The film presents a tragic vision of a world destroyed both physically and spiritually. Stylistically, its very unique and challenging. The ruined environment, darkness, silence, reflects how quickly human achievements can collapse. Unlike many Western post-apocalyptic films, it avoids spectacle, instead it emphasizes consequence.
The film explores the loss of hope and the struggle to find meaning.
The protagonist continues to write to his missing son even though he does not know if the letters will ever be read. This may seem pointless, but it actually represents a powerful form of hope. By writing this letters, he refuses to accept that all human connection is lost. He holds onto the belief that someone might still exist to recieve his words. This suggests that hope can exist even in doubt.
At the same time, the film shows how easily hope can fade. The slow pacing and the emotional exhaustion of the characters all emphasize how difficult it is to hold onto hope in extreme circumstances.
I feel privileged to find such a gem.
