Post-Oscars mood and I just wanted something fun with a bit of action, and a Guy Ritchie movie felt like the perfect choice. Honestly, it ended up being better than I expected. Not amazing, but exactly what I needed.
It has that mix of humor, action and a spy plot that keeps things moving. The story is pretty entertaining, with all the manipulation, information trading and team coordination you’d expect from this kind of film.
The camera work is solid overall, but there are a couple of moments near the end where it switches into a kind of first person perspective, almost like a Call of Duty mission, and that was actually really cool. It gave those scenes a bit of extra energy and made them stand out.
Performance wise, Hugh Grant steals the show. He’s having so much fun with the character, and it really shows. That tower scene in particular is great, but honestly he stands out throughout the whole movie. Jason Statham is good as always, very much in his comfort zone, but hearing him lean into the British accent a bit more was a nice touch. Josh Hartnett was also a pleasant surprise, I always enjoy seeing him on screen, and he fits well here.
And Aubrey Plaza… she’s fantastic. The role suits her perfectly and she plays it with that sharp, dry energy that makes her so fun to watch. The supporting cast is also strong, with people like Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone and Max Beesley adding to the whole dynamic.
It’s not one of Guy Ritchie’s best films, but it doesn’t try to be. It’s just a very entertaining spy movie with enough action, solid performances and a fun tone all the way through. Maybe it could’ve used a bit more action in some parts, but there’s enough to keep things engaging.
If you like spy movies, a bit of action and that Guy Ritchie style, this is a pretty good pick to just sit back and have a good time.
