This movie is absolutely everywhere in terms of its identity, but through all of it a pretty great movie came of it.
First of all our main character group is great, every single one has distinct likeable features and they all contribute satisfyingly, our main duo is great and they have good chemistry, nothing felt forced or synthetic. Not to mention there is a pretty good journey for a movie like this, a lot of shit gets done in this movie and I love it, they easily could’ve opted for a more melodramatic approach but for a ambitious world like this AI one it worked perfectly.
Obviously the strong point here is Shion, not only being an incredible character but also a portrayal of love and care itself, being sort of a blueprint for what Satomi’s mother was always thinking. Somehow the parallels are actually really similar to Wild Robot, something that isn’t supposed to love eventually breaks free and learns to, and just like that movie this one shines here, it’s just an incredibly heartwarming subject to attack especially in this present day of technology.
The biggest thing that stood out for this movie is it’s cohesiveness, a lot of these anime movies attempt to handle numerous sub-plots and themes at once and usually fail, this one handles more than most and handles it with the utmost maturity and realism. Whether it’s a relationship between our main duo or themes of the patriarchy in the world of business this movie has a great grasp on real world issues and events and is able to convey them beautifully and accurately. Even at the end you could say the resolution is almost too satisfying but it actually made sense and didn’t just seem convenient. Big spoiler here but I love how they handled Shion’s background, making it the toy from the start not only seemed correct but it only enhanced our view on Shion and Satomi all together.
Now this movie also is such a good slice of life film. While being able to display a science fiction future flick it also has major touches and great ones of school life and teen life for the characters. For not even an insane runtime you learn so much about not only the world but also the kids and how they interact with each other, also giving time to establish relationships and personalities that don’t get explored, but don’t need to be.
Not to mention the visuals become jaw dropping in this movie, the AI world allows for some crazy colors and futuristic atmosphere and the artists did not take that for granted, not just the fireworks but the entire internet and everything involved looks amazing, I just love animation.
Surprisingly I actually enjoyed the musical aspect of this movie, it wasn’t just there for fun and progressed the story fluidly. Not only Shion singing but the others too, music and songs are used as a communication of love in this movie and it is so fresh of one to see.
All around I am annoyed I just now found this movie, it is a hidden gem at least for me and besides some pacing issues I see no reason why this cannot compete with some of the all time great anime movies.
