I could never be in a fairytale, my ass is too petty. I would’ve killed that mf w/o a second thought.

seeing the little mermaid at the tiff lightbox felt like the perfect introduction to my first experience at the theatre. Karel Kachyna’s version is a breathtaking and hypnotic retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s most tragic fairy tale, staying faithful to the original while intensifying its darker themes. filmed in a dreamy watercolour palette of seafoam greens and shimmering blues, it drifts between surrealism and fantasy with outlandish costumes that heighten the sense of an otherworldly kingdom.
as a child my first encounter with Andersen’s story was through the fairytaler animated short, which softened the heartbreak with a small sense of closure. i remember wishing the original tale carried that same ending, but it wouldn’t hold the same weight if it did. Kachyna makes no such compromises. his film doubles down on the harrowing weight of desire and longing, even departing from Andersen’s ending to show how perilous it is to lose yourself in misplaced love. by the end i was in tears.
