I watched this after learning it was the inspiration and direct predecessor for Summer Wars which I have watched recently. Being essentially the same story and being made by the same director.
This story must have been so crazy, and probably not very well understood in 2000 when it came out but has become more and more relevant and important over the years.
I’ve watched limited Digimon in my life but it is still one of my favourite concepts for a kids show, or just show in general. The creature design, art and animation direction in this was amazing and I especially loved the digitised versions of Taichi and Yamato losing their line-work and becoming borderless during the final fight.
The soundtrack was amazing and the guitar riffs being used for every evolution is especially very 2000s.
I was going into watching this with low expectations considering it was a spin off movie of not the most popular franchises and all done in 2000, but it was amazing.
Other things of note:
- The jet streams in the back being used to everyone together
- The long pauses in silence letting things breath
- The digitising scene and its amazing sound design
- The animation within the fight scenes being stellar
Also shout out to internet archive for having this available for people to watch. Litterally doesn’t exist anywhere else, even physically.
